»Sylvani!  It's over!«  A choked gasp from her- a falter in her stride.  »Fucking go if you will! I'm staying where I belong! Don't you call me your boyfriend to anyone, you hear me? It's over!«

No…

It was delayed- the pain, at least.  At first there was only bewilderment.  He couldn’t be saying that.  He couldn’t mean that.

And then it hit, and she was weightless.  The pain was explosive.  It took her back to her past life, when the hawk had somehow rent fire to her face, but this fire was so much more personal and took deliberate care in carving out every part of her that mattered.  She didn’t know that heartbreak could feel like fire.  It burned inside of her, dancing in delight until it found the most vital part- intensifying, searing till she wanted to scream, and her heart shriveled against the heat and splintered.  She sagged against Niamh’s side, unable to care that they barely knew each other.

She knew the Yellow-Light was looking at her, probably was trying to speak to her, but she wasn’t there.  She was melting and yet somehow her legs were still moving- were still solid?  How strange- and she listened half in wonder as her breath rattled in her throat.

Don’t do this to me.

It was too late.

I don’t have a choice.

But of course she did.

Sylvani looked blearily at Niamh, just managing to make out the yellow tabby’s face through the blur in her vision; she was swaying, but the Yellow-Light’s weight kept her steady.   Thank the Spirits the Golden-Butterflies were ahead of them.  Did you hear? she longed to whisper to her soulbond.  Did you hear, Alcina?  It’s over.

The Orange-Earth’s paws gave a violent tremble and she fought against the wave of panic, lapping around her, threatening to lick her up and bear her on a crest.  She looked like a traitor.  She had chosen to go with the Golden Butterflies…with Alcina.  I do not believe in you.  She looked at the sky with such a fierce, grief-stricken savagery that anyone who knew the tiny miner would back away.  Do you hear me, Alriyel?  I do not believe in you!

Alcina.  She owed this to Alcina, to stay strong.  Only a minute of weakness was allowed.  She clutched desperately at the few seconds remaining to her, a single wretched sob escaping her as she finally thought of all the cats she was leaving behind.  Her mother.  Her father.  All her siblings.  And- dare she say it, even to herself?- Taren.

I love you.  I will come back for you, I promise…

This was not a good time to realize you loved someone.

She would be strong.  Swallow the words that roiled in her chest, screaming to be released.  Embrace her pain and let it keep her steady.  The Followers would never suspect a thing- oh, she would appear so dedicated.  Dedicated till the very day she found a way to get herself and Alcina, and all the other cats tugged into the turmoil by force, to freedom.

She just had to try not to die before then.
No, it don't break even.

Response #1 to the newest TGB plot.  514 words; points to Earth Tribe!

Alcina belongs to Sophister
Niamh belongs to rrath
Taren belongs to Hollyseven
Sylvani belongs to me.
