Birdkit yawned and stretched, her eyes glowing as she looked around camp.  The sun was just beginning to rise, shedding weak golden light over the clearing as the gray tabby washed her pelt as carefully as she could.  Bluekit was still asleep, and she wanted to take advantage of the rare peace before it was shattered by her awakening.
At last she was satisfied with her work, and tipped her muzzle back, raking a judgmental glare over her now-soft fur.  It was darker than Bluekit's and quite reminding of her father, but Birdkit quickly pushed that thought away and stood up, stretching carefully so as not to ruin her newly-washed pelt.
She heard Bluekit stirring inside the nursery and rolled her eyes slightly.  Today was, most likely, their last day as apprentices- and Bluekit was eager to leave the den of kits and leap into their new den.  Birdkit's claws itched with anticipation, but she wouldn't tell any cat that- her thoughts were her own.
"Birdkit!" Bluekit mewed in delight, bounding outside and pausing.  "Wow, did you wash already?"
    "Yes," Birdkit admitted.
"You're quick."  Bluekit gave her thick tail a few admiring swishes before glancing around with sparkling blue eyes.  "Can you believe it, Birdkit?" she breathed.  "We could be apprentices...today!  And then we'd be learning to fight and defend our Clan."
Birdkit nudged her sister playfully.  "We'd have to hunt for them, too, or they'd all starve."
"Oops," purred Bluekit, realizing her mistake.
Birdkit smiled fondly.  "C'mon- let's play mossball or something."
"That's for kits!" scoffed Bluekit, flattening her ears.
A purr rose in Birdkit's throat.  "We are kits!"
"Oh."  Bluekit grinned and then shrugged, padding after her sister.  They had grown admittedly closer over the past half moon, and though it was a tight squeeze, in the nursery they shared a nest.  Both had inherited their mother's long legs and their father's muscular build, and were larger than their age of six moons.  Bluekit was delighted that some cats mistaked her for an apprentice already, but Birdkit was a bit annoyed.
They quickly discovered a tangle root rising up from the ground, only to twist under again, and Birdkit eyed its knobbly bark.  Moss sprouted in clumps off the soggy bark, and she expertly clawed a few pieces off- she was used to gathering moss by now, for it seemed to always be Birdkit who made mossballs for the younger kits in the nursery.
"That looks big enough," commented Bluekit.
Birdkit took the mossball delicately in her teeth and her eyes glowed.  "Bet you can't catch this."
"Bet I can," laughed Bluekit, dropping into a crouch and playfully waggling her hindquarters.
Birdkit heaved forwards the mossball as hard as she could, so that it sailed over Bluekit's head.  Her sister's blue eyes glowed, absorbed with the challenge, and she raced away to catch it in a spectacular dive.
    "Caught it!" she called triumphantly.
    Birdkit purred.  "Good job."
They exchanged throws for a good while until the sun was beating on their backs and the mossball was reduced to a few tangled shreds.  Bluekit purred in amusement and tossed it to Birdkit, who, upon catching it in her teeth, sneezed violently.  The mossball fluttered away, dividing into individual scraps and landing silently on the ground.
    "That was fun," admitted Bluekit.
Birdkit smiled warmly.  "Yeah, it was."
They sat together to share a trout, and Bluekit paused to murmur, "Someday, we'll be eating our own catches."
"Could even be tomorrow," teased Birdkit.
Bluekit smiled and finished her last bite of trout, delicately licking at her paws before sitting back and declaring, "I'll be the best fighter in the Clan someday."
"Yes, you will," Birdkit agreed, her eyes glowing.  "Just like Father."
AHA! It is DONE!!!
The third submission for Bluekit and Birdkit of WaterClan!
They will become apprentices soon (I hope....)
